South Coast Economy

Total nonfarm employment decreased by 190 jobs over the year in Coos County to 23,210. The private education and health services sector experienced the greatest employment gains with 60 jobs. Trade, transportation, and utilities and professional and business services experienced the greatest employment losses with 90 jobs each.

Total nonfarm employment remained flat over the year in Curry County with 6,710 jobs. The leisure and hospitality sector experienced the greatest employment gains with 20 jobs. Other services, TTU, and MLC experienced the greatest employment losses with 20 jobs each.

Special Topic: Industry Gender Pay Gap

Women's wages in Coos County were highest in the utilities sector with an average of over $10,100 per month. This industry also had the greatest pay gap of $5,100 with a ratio of 66% when comparing women's to men's wages. The information sector had the largest pay gap ratio with women earning less than half the earnings of men. In the educational services sector women nearly achieved parity (96%). The average pay gap ratio across all sectors was 74%.

Women's wages in Curry County were highest in the utilities sector with an average of nearly $8,800 per month. This industry also had the greatest pay gap of $4,700 with a ratio of 65% when comparing women's to men's wages. In both the educational services and wholesale trade industries women earned over $2,000 more than their male counterparts with pay gap ratios of 219% and 147% respectively. The average pay gap ratio across all sectors was 86%.
