South Coast Economy

 

Total nonfarm employment declined by 320 jobs over the year in Coos County to 22,830. The government sector experienced the greatest employment gains with 40 jobs. Professional and business services experienced the greatest employment losses with 170 jobs.

 

Total nonfarm employment grew by 40 jobs over the year in Curry County to 6,770. The manufacturing sector experienced the greatest employment gains with 60 jobs. Leisure and hospitality experienced the greatest employment losses with 50 jobs.

Special Topic: Housing Building Permits 2000-2024

The years 2000-2004 saw a ramp up in permitting activity in Coos County culminating in a peak in 2005 driven by a surge in multi family units. There was a sharp drop after 2005 bottoming out at 16 permits in 2011. This was followed by a modest rebound. This past year witnessed a spike in activity, the highest since 2006.

The years 2000-2006 saw heightened levels of permit activity in Curry County. A peak occurred in 2005 followed closely by 2009 with a surge in multi family permits. There was a sharp drop after 2009 bottoming out at 19 permits in 2012. Activity increased the following year and has remained at a relatively higher, stable level. There has been a relative lack of multi family permits issued since 2014.
