South Coast Economic Indicators - October

Hello Economic Indicators readers,

After being delayed by the federal shutdown, Oregon’s monthly employment report for September will be released on Wednesday, December 10th at 10:00 AM. County reports will be released on Tuesday, December 16th at 10:00 AM. Please see the revised news release dates for original and revised release dates.

 

Attached are this month’s South Coast indicators with continuing unemployment insurance claims data in place of updates to the unemployment rate and industry employment change over-the-year. They’re also available at this link!

 

Unemployment Insurance Claims by Industry & Occupation

 

In October 2025 Coos County’s top three industries with the most continuing unemployment insurance claims were healthcare and social assistance (19%), construction (14%), and retail trade (12%). Office and administrative support occupations accounted for 19% of claims followed by management (15%) and construction and extraction (13%).

 

In October 2025 Curry County’s top three industries with the most continuing unemployment insurance claims were healthcare and social assistance (22%), retail trade (18%), and accommodation and food services (14%). Healthcare support occupations accounted for 14% of claims followed by management (13%) and farming, fishing, & forestry (11%).

 

Special Topic: Work From Home Workforce

In 2013 approximately 1,600 individuals or 7% of the workforce worked from home in Coos County. This figure dropped to about 1,500 (6%) in 2018, followed by an increase to above 1,900 (8%) in 2023. The share of the workforce that works from home has been stable.

In 2013 approximately 600 individuals or 7% of the workforce worked from home in Curry County. This figure increased modestly in 2018, followed by a marked uptick to above 1,500 (13%) in 2023. The share of the workforce that works from home nearly tripled.

 

The state and country experienced rapid increases in the share of workers working from home over this 10-year period. Oregon’s share jumped from 6% to 17%, and the United States’ share increased from 4% to 13%.
