South Coast Economy
Total nonfarm employment declined by 210 jobs over the year in Coos County to 23,340. The leisure and hospitality and manufacturing sectors experienced the greatest employment gains with 50 jobs each. Professional and business services experienced the greatest employment losses with 170 jobs.
Total nonfarm employment grew by 50 jobs over the year in Curry County to 6,730. The private education and health services sector experienced the greatest employment gains with 30 jobs. Professional and business services experienced the greatest employment losses with 40 jobs.

This report analyzes bills of lading receipts processed in Coos Bay from March 2019 to July 2025 which serves as a proxy for trade activity. Receipts were relatively stable leading into early 2024 when activity increased. This past year there was a 431% surge in the average monthly volume of shipments being received in Coos Bay from a recent record low in January 2024. By October 2024 receipts had increased to 193, a record high.
Receipts in Brookings were relatively stable leading into early 2024 when activity increased. This past year there was a 1200% surge in the average monthly volume of shipments being received in Brookings from a recent record low in January 2024. By October 2024 receipts had increased to 76, a record high.
