South Coast Economic Indicators - October 2023

Here are this month’s South Coast indicators with October data. You can also view them by following this QualityInfo link.

South Coast Economy

Coos County gained 770 jobs and Curry County added 60 jobs over the last 12 months. Leisure and hospitality added jobs, as did a number of professional and other services as well as health care. The unemployment rate in both counties is 4.3%, near their all-time record low set in late 2019 and in Curry’s case setting a new record low. Special Topic: Manufacturing and Industry Profiles

Have you used the Industry Profiles tool on Quality Info? It’s a fantastic way to get a deep dive look at the makeup of an industry at a local level. I use it often when I’m trying to understand what makes an area’s industry unique and get a snapshot of recent history.

Manufacturing in the South Coast is the example for this month’s graph. Both Coos and Curry County have larger seasonal manufacturing swings than most places in the state, which makes the graphs a bit harder to read. What is clear is both counties recovered employment fully from the 2008 Great Recession, which affected employment in manufacturing severely. Manufacturing job losses after 2020, particularly in Coos County, have been more severe than those statewide.

Beyond the history of employment in an industry, you can also find occupational data such as wages,

largest occupations in the field, and staffing patterns, providing insight into the type of workers needed for the industry to thrive.
